The Librarians
The Librarians, Kim A. Snyder’s critically acclaimed documentary, focusses on the culture war struggles of librarians in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and other states, who have united to combat book banning demands from Moms for Liberty and other right-wing pressure groups in the United States. As one recent reviewer put it: “Incredibly principled and brave, the librarians talk about their vocation and standing up for the young people for whom libraries are a safe space where they can discover their identity in the pages of books” (The Guardian). The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director, and some members of the production team.

Wild Horse Nine
Martin McDonagh returns with another tragi-comic two-hander with a razor-sharp script and outstanding performances from a stellar cast. After the success of The Banshees of Inisherin , McDonagh has turned his attention to Chile in the 1970s, where two CIA men discuss morality and mortality during a dispatch to the vanishingly remote and metaphorically rich Easter Island. With John Malkovich as the ailing Chris, mentor to Sam Rockwell’s Lee, and idiosyncratic support from Steve Buscemi, Parker Posey and Tom Waits, the film is an accidental allegory for present-day politics with trademark bittersweet notes, sweeping landscapes and strategically-placed horses.

Cinema Rediscovered: Pastor Hall
When the quiet German village of Altdorf is taken over by an SS platoon which proceeds to enforce Hitler's ideals upon its inhabitants, a kindly pastor questions the agenda of ‘The New Order’. Before long, he is punished for his vocal opposition and is sent to Dachau, where, despite the abuse and brutality which he suffers, he refuses to give in to the madness and inhumanity of National Socialism. Prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, the policy of the UK’s ruling Conservative Party was one of appeasement when it came to Nazi Germany. As a consequence, the screenplay for Pastor Hall – based on the true story of German Protestant minister Martin Niemöller, who was persecuted by the Nazis – was rejected outright by the BBFC when submitted in early 1939. However, when war was declared later that year, the Board's policy shifted and Pastor Hall was rushed into production and released into cinemas in 1940. Part of Cinema Rediscovered on Tour .
